Description
Context:
Hydrogen is considered as a key element in the reduction of CO2 release in the atmosphere. 100 000 jobs related to deployment of hydrogen facilities are expected in France by 2030, with a large part of engineers and scientists. This is the reason why it is financially supported by French government (7.2 10^9 € in “Stratégie nationale pour le développement de l’hydrogène décarbonée en France”). Hydrogen is one of the most challenging fuel in terms of security, because its wide range of flammability (from 4% to 75%) and its small quenching distances (around 600μm) increase the potential risk of hydrogen leaks. The physics of hydrogen-air flames rises open questions regarding thermal, hydrodynamic and reactive effects that need to be addressed in theoretical and experimental investigations.
Internship description
In order to understand the contribution of each physical effect on the propagation velocity of diverse flames, a study of hydrogen flames is proposed in Hele-Shaw cells of diverse gap width in presence of incoming flow. Data will be collected from analysis of the flame propagation images, recorded with high speed cameras (up to 100 000 images/second). The maximum local velocity and flame structuration will be extracted from each experiment by way of image processing (Python or Matlab). The internship is fitted so that a good level student could obtain publication of the results in an international journal and eventually participation to an international congress.
Conditions
Applicants should have standard physicist abilities: a good background in physics, adequate experimental capacity.
Duration between 2 months and 5 months.
Minimal grant 560€/month
The internship can be followed by a PhD grant if the applicant is in M2
